High-Performance Light Output

  • We use the latest in visible and IR LED technology combined with custom optics designed in-house.
  • That means precise beam shapes send light only where it is intended to go, while still maintaining accurate chromaticity and minimizing power consumption.
  • We use best-in-class and small form-factor LEDS to create precise focal points and increased performance efficiency. Rapid pulse width modulation (PWM) of the LEDs prevents unwanted color shifts and allows precise variable control of output intensity.
We offer consistent, predictable illumination unaffected by intensity adjustments, changing temperature, battery charge levels, or other factors that could affect an inferior product’s output.

How we help you specify the light intensity you need

Carmanah obstruction lights can be programmed to perform at a wide range of intensities, from a few candela up to well over 379 peak candela (OL800 white model). The brightness of the light will determine how far away it can be seen. The brighter your light, the more energy it will consume. For solar-powered products, brighter lights need more solar panels and batteries to ensure that they can last all night throughout the year, including the winter months that typically have less sunlight. To get a good product at optimal cost, it’s best to request realistic intensity settings.

Candela: The desired intensity can also be specified by required candela value. In our calculations, we always use Effective Intensity to measure a light’s brightness, which is the intensity that your eye perceives when looking at a light. In the case of a flashing light, the human eye will always perceive a lower value than the actual output, known as Peak Intensity, of the LEDs. Our calculations compensate for the fact that the LEDs will need to be driven to a higher value to achieve the Effective Intensity requested. Calculating using Effective Intensity instead of Peak Intensity ensures you get a product with the light output you expect and the right solar engine to perform reliably.

Visible Distance: A third way to specify your intensity requirement is by entering a distance from which the light should be seen. Visibility depends on conditions such as smog, smoke particles, and water vapor. We use 0.85 transmissivity for Obstruction distance calculations to cover the most typical atmospheric conditions.

What Color Light Do I Need?

Carmanah Obstruction lights are designed to meet the needs of industrial applications. This means we have taken great care with our optical design and LED selection to ensure that, where required, our products meet the industry specified requirements for chromaticity and intensity.

Red: Our red OL series lights are primarily used in aviation obstruction applications.

Blue: Blue is commonly used for marking equipment areas, wayfinding applications, or railway blue flag protection.

White: White is used for route marking and generic hazard marking.

Yellow: Yellow is used for caution marking and generic hazard marking.

Green: Green is used for entrances to mine sites, haul routes, and other wayfinding applications.

What Is Solar Sizing?

The number of days your product can run, independent of charging, is referred to as its “autonomy.” Typically, an autonomy of 7 days is recommended (imagine 7 days without sun!); however, some specifications require more or fewer days of autonomy, depending on the specifying authority, the product location, and local weather conditions. Requesting more autonomy may increase the overall product size and cost as, in general, a larger battery and more panels will be required.

Simple Light Tracking and Updating
We offer remote monitoring via Globalstar’s advanced satellite network, which provides reliable connectivity across large territories regardless of the location. LightGuard, Carmanah’s proprietary software platform, uses a simple interface and email alert system. It is available on the OL800 series. Track deployed lights, monitor battery and light performance, and increase response time to any light fault with system alarms.

Fewer Maintenance Calls
LightGuard’s remote diagnostics on monitored solar lights allows users to recognize an anomaly sooner. Getting the Most out of Your Obstruction Light

In our standard recommendation process, we’ll suggest a cost-effective solution that meets the most common user requirements, provides good intensity, and has suitable energy storage to perform reliably at your installation location. Many of our obstruction lights also come with value-added features that can enhance the overall performance of your lighting system.

Flash Pattern: While a standard steady-on setting will be desirable for many applications, our OL800 lights can also be programmed for various distinct flash patterns. Flashing can be a valuable feature to further improve visibility or even to give a solar product extra power in a difficult location (flashing lights draw less energy than one that is illuminated 100% of the time). In obstruction applications, flashing has also been proven to reduce the negative impacts of tower lighting on birds and bats and is gradually becoming a standard recommendation in many locations.

GPS Flash Synchronization: This feature is available with a subset of our lights. It is particularly useful in aviation obstruction applications and in way-finding applications where synchronizing flashing along a path will help increase visibility for approaching traffic. This feature is currently only available on request with our OL800 products and should be used with the flash pattern feature described to the left.

External Chargeport: Carmanah’s solar-powered lights are designed to recharge fully each day through the natural power of the sun. However, in the event that you will be storing your lights indoors for lengthy periods, an external chargeport may be a useful feature. This option will allow you to connect your light to an AC charger to top up the battery prior to deployment. All connectors are in the base of the product and have a sealed port to prevent water ingress.
